Are you or someone you know interested in the idea of Community Gardening? At Region Five, we are committed to our local foods initiatives and that includes community gardens! We have many fantastic resources for anyone looking into the idea of starting a community garden, getting friends and neighbors involved, or expanding an existing garden. We even have a grant program for those interested in providing education related to community gardening! For more information, or for a grant application, please send an email to Vista@regionfive.org, or give the office a call.

Happy Gardening!

Independance Day

In Uncategorized on July 6, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Hopefully all of you had a safe and happy Independence Day!  As we all file back to our daily routines, it comes to mind that there are those in our communities who may not have been fortunate enough to enjoy the traditional bonfires, fireworks and grilled burgers that are, for most of us, standard July 4th fanfare.  There are some who barely get one meal a day, who struggle to feed their children, and who can only wish there was a job to trudge back to after the long weekend.  As we reflect on the weekend, let us also reflect on those less fortunate and be mindful of what we can all do to make their lives a little easier.

According to the US Census Bureau, there are 35.9 million people living below the poverty line and 3.5% of US households experience hunger. How can this be? In a Country of plenty where wealth and opportunity abound, it is easy for us to turn a blind eye to our friends and neighbors who are not nearly as fortunate as we are.

Region Five has dedicated an entire workforce to Local Foods; we are doing our part to help educate people on where to find and buy local food, thus bolstering the local economy, and helping provide healthy meals to our friends and neighbors.  Join us in our efforts by spreading the word about the local foods initiative, and encouraging one another to give of our time and talents to lift up our neighbors in need. There are various resources available to anyone and everyone looking to lend a helping hand–it just takes a moment to find them and start changing lives!
